Chapter Fifteen
After Iâd soaked in the emerald waters, new life flowed through me. I spent the rest of the night in my bedchamber, two human guards posted alongside the Fallen at my doorway. Probably owing to the fact that living humans could physically resist a witchâs attack, though theyâd be foolish to do so.
I couldnât see the entrance to the Grand Hall from my window, but I heard the whinnying of steeds and draft unicorns as the sun rose. Shouts, voices, and stomping hooves carried over the still morning air. I could have gotten out of bed to glimpse them in the courtyard, but they didnât warrant the effort. When the crack of a whip and the rattling of carriage wheels struck my ears, I knew the witches had gone.
Good riddance.
I hoped Iâd never have to see another witch or warlock in my life. Lord Devian was more than enough witchblood for me to handle.
Satisfied the castle was free of those monsters, I rolled over in my soft bed and slept better than I had since Iâd first arrived nearly a week before.
When I awakened, the fading sun greeted me, and I found myself nearly smiling. The idea of being nocturnal was growing on me. At first, Iâd longed for the light of day, but I now rather enjoyed the comforting cover of darkness, the murky clouds, the pale moon, and the occasional shred of starlight that peeked through the nightâs veil.
After I got dressed in my usual trousers and tunic, which had been freshly cleaned, my mood darkened again, and my mind swam with doubts. Until now, the idea of killing Lord Devian had been the purpose that had kept me going. But now, I was unsure. I still didnât like him. Nor did I trust him or entirely believe his claims that he was blameless.
But If I were to kill him, I needed to be absolutely certain he was the cause of our landâs suffering.
After all, Iâd never killed before. Not even a small animal. When Winnley and the others used to go hunting for hares on Sundays, Iâd stayed back. The idea of seeing the life fading from the hareâs eyes as it died at my hand had made my stomach twist.
By some breath of courage, I had lunged at Lord Devian with a clay shard that night, but even that had been a moment of desperation. The truth was, I didnât even know if I was capable, though I liked to believe I could commit the deed if I had to. If I was one-hundred percent certain I was letting Mortriel possess me for the greater good.
As I tightened my waist belt and tied my hair into a long side braid, one thing became clear. I needed more information before I did anything else.
A knock on my door made me gasp. After checking in the mirror that I was presentable, I shuffled over to the entrance and swung it open.
Lord Devian and Col stood side by side, their faces stoic.
